Create Free Account →This calculator uses a Lambertian emission model — the same physics engine as our PPFD Map tool. Light intensity follows the inverse-square law (1/r²), modified by the beam angle which determines how directional the emission is. Multi-bar LED fixtures are modeled as multiple point sources distributed along each bar, producing more realistic spread calculations than single-point estimates.
Correction (31 August 2026): the emission model was missing its Lambertian normalization, so PPFD and DLI read high, by a factor of pi at a 120° beam. Results are now corrected downward and agree with the PPFD Map. A calculation saved before this date still holds the older, inflated numbers: re-run it to refresh them.
PPF (µmol/s)
Total photons emitted per second. Found on manufacturer spec sheets. Higher PPF means more total light output.
PPFD (µmol/m²/s)
Photons hitting a specific area per second. Depends on distance, angle, and canopy size. This is what plants experience.
Uniformity
How evenly light is distributed. Higher is better. Multi-bar LEDs at the right height typically achieve 60-80%. Single COBs may be 30-50%.
Efficacy (µmol/J)
Photons produced per watt. Modern LEDs achieve 2.5-3.0 µmol/J. Higher efficacy = less heat, lower electricity costs.
How many watts per square foot do I need?
For modern LEDs: 25-35W/sq ft for veg, 35-50W/sq ft for flower. For HPS: 40-60W/sq ft. Budget LEDs need more wattage due to lower efficiency.
What is PPFD and how is it different from lumens?
PPFD measures photosynthetically active radiation — the light plants actually use. Lumens measure light visible to humans. A light can have high lumens but low PPFD if it emits wavelengths plants can't use efficiently.
What is beam angle?
The full angle at which light intensity drops to 50% of center. Wider angles (120-150°) spread light more but reduce center intensity. Narrow angles (60-90°) concentrate light but create hotspots.
What does uniformity mean?
Uniformity measures how evenly light is distributed across your canopy. 100% means perfectly even. Below 50% means significant hotspots or dark edges. Multi-bar fixtures typically have better uniformity than single COBs.

The calculator models the fixture as a set of point emitters with a Lambertian angular distribution, then sums their contributions at each sample point on the canopy.
PPF is in micromoles per second. PPFD is in micromoles per square meter per second (SI canonical: mol/m^2/s). DLI is in moles per square meter per day. Distances convert to meters at 0.0254 m per inch.
Running the calculator at its own default inputs:

A single fixture over a 60 x 60 in canopy concentrates light in the center, which is why uniformity is low here. Raising the fixture or adding a second one spreads the distribution.
